You are not alone. LGBT rights are human rights. Together we will build a world that is free and equal.
Whether you are struggling with mental health issues, your identity, or just need someone to talk to, we believe help should be accessible to everyone. We noticed that individuals in the LGBTQ community suffer from mental health issues at a disproportionately high rate and we wanted to help. By providing online therapy to the LGBTQ community, we make help accessible and accepting of everyone. We provide a platform for people to get the help they need discreetly, affordably, and conveniently. Message your therapist whenever an issue arises. Schedule sessions that work with your schedule. It is important for us to us know that people from all backgrounds and communities feel comfortable coming into SEMA and/or volunteering with us. SEMA also offers peer counseling and support services. These services include support and/or prevention groups targeting the special needs of LGBTQ persons. We are currently taking steps to ensure SEMA can be an inclusive place for everyone, and in doing so we are making a commitment to embody anti-racism, and to challenge misogyny, ageism, transphobia, biphobia and disabled discrimination within our work.

Every person deserves acceptance and understanding
LGBTQ+ people are more likely to be affected by mental health problems, including anxiety, depression, suicidal feelings and substance misuse. The higher prevalence of mental health issues within the LGBTQ+ community is due to a range of factors, including discrimination, homophobia/biphobia/transphobia and isolation. Many LGBTQ+ people don’t use mainstream support services because they’re afraid of stigma, discrimination or a lack of understanding.
Our counselling service helps LGBTQ+ people talk to a professional in a setting where they feel accepted and affirmed for who they are. All our counsellors have extensive knowledge of issues affecting LGBTQ+ people. This means it’s a safe and non-judgemental space where you can talk openly about what’s happening in your life.
How we make a difference
Our counsellors help LGBTQ+ people gain greater insight into themselves, their relationships and their life challenges. Over time, this can increase their sense of autonomy and emotional wellbeing as they develop their own strategies for dealing with any difficulties they may face. Every year, we provide over 1000 hours of counselling to LGBTQ+ people from all over Africa but specifically South Africa & East Africa. We help people to increase their self-acceptance and feel more able to manage challenging situations in their lives. We also refer people to our other services, including for sexual health, mental health advocacy or HIV.
